Welcome to 2014, everyone!   I hope everyone’s holidays were merry and bright.  We’ve been enjoying some true winter weather here in Nebraska, with cold temps and an inch or two of snow every few days.

I’ve talked before about the benefits of raising pigs inside and out, but I gotta say, on winter days like this, I’d be a big fan of indoor living if I was a pig!

Hog barns are equipped with ventilation systems designed to keep the pigs cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  It was well below freezing outside and cold winds blew hard, but it was a balmy 72.1 in this barn last week.

Plus, nursery pigs even get extra heaters to keep them warm.  These heat lamps hang from the ceiling and often you can see the little pigs hanging under the heat lamps to stay toasty.

Doesn’t that look like the best nap pile ever?  So cuddly, so snuggly. Ahhhhhh.  Stay warm, little guys!
